Recognition of Prior Learning
Could the skills you have count towards the qualification you want?
If you've got on-the-job experience, have undertaken informal training or once got part of the way through a course, Recognition of Prior Learning may be your key to a fast-tracked qualification.
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) acknowledges skills and knowledge gained outside the university and TAFE system, through paid or volunteer work, informal or employer-based training.
Why apply for RPL?
Applying successfully for RPL may:
- Eliminate or reduce the need for training in skills you already possess
- Save you the time you would have spent attending classes and completing coursework
- Save you the money you would have spent on textbooks or learning resources
- Allow for the earlier completion of a qualification
- Enable advancement to a higher level qualification if desired
When to apply for RPL
It is suggested that prospective Australian (domestic) higher education students submit their application for recognition of prior learning with their course application or first enrolment form.
RPL at Swinburne
RPL assessment is available for all Swinburne Online courses. If you have been working for some time (at least three years in a relevant role) then we would encourage you to consider applying for RPL through a streamlined skills recognition process which has been put in place especially for Swinburne Online students. If you are suitable candidate then Swinburne TAFE will work with you to assess your experience against a full Diploma, giving you credit for up to one third of your degree. For further information, or to start this process, visit: Applying for Recognition of Prior Learning for a TAFE Diploma.
You may also apply for RPL for an individual unit in your degree program. For further information, or to start this process, go to: Applying for Recognition of Prior Learning for a Specific Unit.
Recognition of formal qualifications (Credit transfer)
Credit transfer recognises formal qualifications you have obtained within the previous 10 years and awards credit towards completing a Swinburne Online undergraduate qualification.
If you have previously completed a diploma, advanced diploma or have partially or fully completed an undergraduate qualification, you may be eligible to receive credit towards a Swinburne Online undergraduate program.
Your eligibility for credit transfer will be assessed during the application process and awarded credits listed on an offer letter.
