Convenient Course Structure

Swinburne Online recognises that you are busy and we provide a flexible program able to fit around your work and lifestyle demands. For example, you can select and vary the study load that best suits your circumstances.

Swinburne Online has structured the online learning environment around 3 teaching periods. This allows students to develop their own study plan, fast-track their degree and complete the program in their preferred time frame. Unlike other online calendars, we schedule a Consolidation Week in the middle of each Teaching Period, study breaks over Christmas/New Year and of course between Teaching Periods.

Three Teaching Periods per year.

Teaching Period Start Date Census Date
TP1 12/03/2012 6/04/2012
TP2 9/07/2012 3/08/2012
TP3 5/11/2012 30/11/2012

Students are able to enrol in one to four units each Teaching Period, depending on their external commitments, pre-requisites and unit availability.

Undergraduate degrees consist of 24 units of study.

Enrolment is highly flexible, and students can choose to complete any number of units in a teaching period. The suggested study load is six units per year, consisting of two units in each of the three study periods. We think that this study load can be balanced with reasonable family and employment commitments and enables the student to complete a degree in a desired timeframe.

Other possible study loads include accelerated, full-time and part-time.

  • Accelerated – twelve units per year over two years
  • Full time – eight units per year over three years
  • Suggested – six units per year over four years
  • Part time – four units per year over six years

Courses will be designed to allow for maximum flexibility, allowing students to change their major area of study, or select minors and electives from other programs. A foundation enabling unit, Learning and Communicating Online, will be included in all programs, with further generic skills development embedded in discipline based studies.
